The term "Bowie knife" does not refer to a specific company, as many believe. The term actually refers to a style popularized by knife Colonel James "Jim" Bowie. Today, a bowie knife is any type of large knife sheath with a clip point.
The first knives made of Jim Bowie throughout his life like other knives common period. The first knife, designed by the brother of Jim Bowie and directed by James Black smith, like a cross between a Spanish hunting knife and a butcher knife regularly, with a blade about 10 inches long, quarter inch thick and about an inch and a half wide. Unlike modern Bowie knives, this knife was not a point of clip, it has not have a hand guards, unlike the modern versions. The first knife Bowie knife and all subsequent made by James Black are known for very hard steel, He died not waive privilege, and now, the process has not been duplicated.
This first version of the Bowie knife became famous after a fight in a duel in 1827. Once the duel was over, a brawl erupted between spectators and Bowie killed three men using a knife even if it had been shot with a rifle. When Bowie and his knife has achieved instant popularity, Bowie and his brother began to receive numerous requests for the knife, and eventually the development of many different versions of cutlery.
Most knives Bowie had a blade of between 6 and 12 inches long. Steel is usually relatively thick and wide, up to 2 cm wide and 1 / 4 "thick. Some Bowie knife blades have a band of brass, copper or other soft metal, which was designed as a cushion to prevent the blades relative quality poor break. Other features included a guard over the blade to catch the enemy and protect the user's hand. Some also included a single notch on the bottom of the blade near the handle. The "Spanish Notch", it is said was used to capture the opponent's blade, although its actual use is somewhat obscure. It may have been used as a tool or as a guide for the blade sharpening process.
The clip point found on most knives Bowie had an edge unique rear, an advantage sometimes called "false", which could also be refined. These knives were made by many companies in Sheffield, England since the 1850s, and are sometimes called "Sheffield Bowie" knives. The Bowie knife also has a rounded tip. Since the 1960s many Bowie knives were made with serrated teeth on the back of the blade; during the Vietnam war the U.S. military has released these knives, because the teeth can cut through the resin from a plane or helicopter shot.
Today, many different companies make knives Bowie, and the term is often used to describe any knife sheath wide. They are available in decorative styles and memorabilia, as well as hunting and survival knives functional. This knife, in its modern incarnation, is useful for camping and hunting as well as a weapon, it is designed to do two jobs exceptionally well, leading to its current popularity.
Sharpen ‘Em offers a large selection of quality knife sharpeners from all the best manufacturers, from low-budget pocket-sized sharpeners to high-end sharpening steels.
